The playground at Joe Glik Park may soon become a little bit comfier.

At Thursday’s Administrative and Community Services meeting in Edwardsville, Aldermen Craig Louer, Barb Stamer and Tom Butts recommended the approval of a poured-in-place recycled rubber playground surface.

Ecoturf Surfacing was the low bidder of four at $10,106.25. The highest bid came in at $18,400.

“This allows for the purchase of rubber surfacing on their playgrounds again,”  said Parks and Recreation Director Bob Pfeiffer, who noted that the county had discontinued it in years past. “We are going to take advantage of that and expand the playground surface at Joe Glik Park. We are going to remove some of the wood fiber material that we use as a cushioning material and replace it with a rubberized surface.”

Ecoturf serves cities throughout the Midwest, including Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. The corporate office is in Kansas City.

Pfeiffer said the city did its research on Ecoturf.

“We asked around with people that have used them in the past, and we found that they have done excellent work,” Pfeiffer said.

There is a 25-percent match through the Madison County Sustainability Grant that would help fund the project.
