Park Hill School District Partners with Ecoturf Surfacing to Upgrade Playground Safety Across 15 Missouri Schools

The Park Hill School District in Missouri continues to demonstrate leadership in student safety and facility planning through a large-scale playground modernization initiative. By partnering with Ecoturf Surfacing of Kansas City, the district successfully installed more than 120,000 square feet of playground turf across 15 schools, delivering safer, more durable, and more comfortable play environments for students.

Safety as the Driving Force

The district’s top priority throughout the project was clear: protecting children in active play spaces. School playgrounds experience constant use, and traditional surfaces often deteriorate under heavy foot traffic, increasing maintenance demands and safety concerns. Park Hill sought a long-term solution designed specifically for commercial school playgrounds, where durability and fall protection are essential.

Turf Designed for High-Traffic School Environments

The artificial turf system selected for the project was engineered to perform in demanding, high-use conditions. Unlike standard landscape turf, this playground-specific system maintains consistent performance even with daily use by hundreds of students. Key benefits include:

  • High resilience in heavy foot-traffic areas
  • Uniform shock absorption for improved fall protection
  • Reduced maintenance compared to loose-fill surfaces
  • Strong return on investment over the life of the playground

Certified, Accessible, and Inclusive

The turf installed throughout the district was manufactured by Shawgrass, a recognized leader in recreational synthetic turf. Shawgrass playground systems:

  • Are certified by the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA)
  • Comply fully with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards

These certifications ensure that Park Hill’s playgrounds are safe, inclusive, and accessible to all students, including those with mobility challenges.

Integrated Safety Padding for Impact Protection

Beneath the turf surface lies a specially engineered safety pad, designed to work as a unified system with the turf fibers. This padding provides consistent impact attenuation across the entire playground, unlike loose-fill materials that can shift, compact, or wash away. The result is a stable, reliable surface that maintains safety performance year after year.

Cooling Comfort with HydroChill® Technology

To further enhance student comfort, the Park Hill playgrounds incorporate HydroChill®, a patented cooling technology unique to Shawgrass systems. HydroChill® is a precoat applied to the sand infill and has been extensively tested in both laboratory and real-world conditions.

When moisture is present, HydroChill®:

  • Stores water within the infill
  • Gradually releases moisture as the turf heats up
  • Provides evaporative cooling that can reduce surface temperatures for extended periods, depending on local weather conditions

This added cooling benefit helps create more comfortable play spaces during warmer months without changing how the playgrounds are used.

Saving Time and Money Through Cooperative Purchasing

A critical component of the project’s success was Park Hill’s use of the Greenbush Purchasing Cooperative. By leveraging this cooperative purchasing program, the district was able to streamline procurement, significantly reduce administrative time, and cut overall project costs.

The cooperative contract structure allowed Park Hill to move quickly from planning to installation while maintaining compliance with public purchasing requirements—helping ensure consistency across all 15 schools and accelerating project timelines.

A Model for Future School Playground Projects

Through its partnership with Ecoturf Surfacing, the strategic use of the Greenbush Purchasing Cooperative, and the selection of a purpose-built playground turf system, Park Hill School District delivered a district-wide solution that prioritizes safety, accessibility, durability, and comfort.

With more than 120,000 square feet of new playground turf now in place, Park Hill’s investment stands as a strong example for school districts across Missouri and the Midwest seeking efficient, cost-effective ways to modernize playground infrastructure while keeping student well-being at the center of every decision.
